Description of Drillmate
Drillmate is best described as a lightweight portable drill press, and with the
attachments is suitable for most drilling requirements. Maximum recommended
drill size is 1/2" (13mm) in steel [ 5/16" (8.0mm) without pilot hole]. Drillmate
adapts to all electric drills which have a 1-11/16" (43mm) diameter neck.
NOTE: Drill is not provided with Drillmate.
Advantages of Drillmate can be categorized into three areas.
(1) Ergonomic: - Reduction of human effort required and in awkward situa-
tions direction of force ergonomically desirable.
(2) Safety: - Control of drill is not direct in hand of operator and due to even
force drill bit is not likely to grab in work piece, and as drill is not held in
hand, if drill does grab, will not wrench hand.
(3) Efficiency: - Due to even and correct force being applied to drill and
reaction force being applied directly behind work piece (i) Rapid drilling
i.e.; maximum efficiency is achieved and (ii) Holes will be a lot straighter
in work piece than is generally achieved by hand.
Drillmate has an attachment, which is a "vee" block configuration for drilling of
pipes or round material to 2 1/2" (65mm) diameter.
The channel stem attachment is a 3 15/16" (100mm) stem which allows the leg of
the Drillmate to fit around the flanges of the channel (or I beam) for drilling of the
main web area. A work plate attachment is also available to give a larger surface
for support of the work piece to be drilled. Slots are provided for a drill vice to be
fitted (drill vice and attachment bolts are not provided). With the work plate,
provision is made for mounting to workbench.
Provision in the leg is made for clamping in an engineers vice. It can be used in
this manner with or without the work plate. When used in this manner the 45°
block (not provided) can be fitted under the work plate for drilling of mitered
faces, e.g.: for dowels on 45° mitered corners for timber.
A stop lock collar is provided for depth control for multiple use, whilst the gradu-
ated collar can be used for individual depth control.
