FRONT PANEL FACILITIES
The Front Panel is fully lit over its entire surface using the latest in Electroluminescent
technology. This is a purely practical application of illumination to enable the setting of
every control to be clearly seen in even the darkest environment. The panel is
permanently lit and has a comprehensive protection circuit to ensure reliable operation
for many years. In the event of a mains surge or a short circuit, (i.e. the panel is damaged
in any way), it will 'trip out' and cut the power supply to the panel. It can be re-set by
turning the unit on and off via the rear mounted mains switch. The overlay is very
resilient to damage but in the event of a major breakdown it should be referred to a
qualified service engineer. These panels are easy and inexpensive to replace!
Input Sockets
There are two INPUT sockets; one for PASSIVE instruments i.e. those that have no
internal preamp or battery and one for ACTIVE instruments.
The PASSIVE socket has a very high input impedance to perfectly match the output signal
from a passive instrument. This allows the full tonal range of the instrument to be
reproduced without the loss of top end that can be caused by an impedance mismatch.
This input is far more sensitive than the ACTIVE input. This is necessary because PASSIVE
basses generally have a much smaller output signal.
The ACTIVE input is suitable for the lower impedance outputs from instruments that have
their own internally powered pre amp. This input can also cope with the much higher
level of signal that some of these instruments can produce. However should you be using
an active instrument that does not have a very large signal output, then it is perfectly
acceptable to plug this into the PASSIVE input.
Input Gain
The level of the instrument signal through the amplifier is adjusted using the INPUT
GAIN control. This has level indication using 3 LED's. The first marked 'More Gain'
indicating that more level through the amplifier is required for optimum performance
from the unit. The second has a 'Thumbs Up' symbol indicating that the INPUT GAIN
control is set correctly and a third marked 'Less Gain' indicates that clipping or distortion
is occurring at some point throughout the amplifier.
The circuit for these LED's monitors a number of strategic points throughout the
amplifier and is thus a good indication when unwanted clipping is occurring.
To get the best results from your amplifier it is important to understand fully the
correct use of the INPUT GAIN control. The optimum setting is achieved when the
INPUT GAIN control is as high as possible without lighting the red LESS GAIN LED.
