6. CLEANING AND DISINFECTION

6.1.

SURFACE CLEANING AND DISINFECTION

See Annex A5.1
6.2.

FRONT GLASS CLEANING AND DISINFECTION

See Annex A5.2
6.3.

DISINFECTION WITH FORMALDEHYDE

Total decontamination of the cabinet could be done using disinfecting gas emission, which
ensures penetration in sealed and inaccessible areas of the Cabinet. It also guarantees the
sterilization of the working area, fan, plenum, HEPA filters and evacuation ducts.
Decontamination is usually done by fumigation with formaldehyde vapor. However, this may
not be suitable in certain cases, such as when it is necessary to follow specific regulations.
Alternatives may be used, e.g., hydrogen peroxide.
WARNING
Disinfection with formaldehyde is not recommended due to it is known to be a human
carcinogen and it should only be done in line with the safety standards of each country,
region and company.
The formaldehyde gas is irritant and toxic when inhaled. When solutions are used for surface
disinfection, the vapors given out from the surface can injure the respiratory mucosa. This
can be nullified by the use of ammonia vapor after disinfection has been completed. It is also
a skin irritant.
See Annex A5.3 for the formalin disinfection procedure.
6.4.

DISINFECTION WITH VAPORIZED HYDROGEN PEROXIDE

It is recommended to do decontamination of the cabinet by using vaporized hydrogen
peroxide emission, which ensures penetration in sealed and inaccessible areas of the
Cabinet. It also guarantees the sterilization of the working area, fan, plenum, HEPA filters
and evacuation ducts.
Vaporized hydrogen peroxide systems provide rapid, safe, low-temperature decontamination
methods for any enclosed area that may be contaminated with micro-organisms, including
spore-forming bacteria.
See Annex A5.4 for the disinfection with vaporized hydrogen peroxide procedure.
