1 Operating Elements and Connections

1 DMX signal input (5-pole XLR)
1 = ground, 2 = DMX-, 3 = DMX+, 4 and
5 = unconnected
2 DIP switches No. 1 to 9 for adjusting the DMX
start address (see chapter 4);
DIP switch No. 10 for the reset function (see chap-
ter 6)
3 DMX signal output (5-pole XLR)
1 = ground, 2 = DMX-, 3 = DMX+, 4 and
5 = unconnected
4 LEDs, indicating the switching status of the control
outputs (5)
5 Plug-in screw terminals for the control channel out-
puts
To facilitate handling, the terminals can be re-
moved from their plug-in connections.
6 Mains cable for connecting a mains socket
(230 V~/50 Hz)

2 Safety Notes

This unit corresponds to the directive for electromag-
netic compatibility 89/336/EEC and to the low volt-
age directive 73/23/EEC.
Attention! The unit is supplied with hazardous
mains voltage (230 V~). Leave servicing
to skilled personnel only. Inexpert han-
dling may cause an electric shock haz-
ard. Furthermore, any guarantee claim
will expire if the unit has been opened.
Please observe the following items in any case:
The unit is suitable for indoor use only. Protect it
against dripping water and splash water, high air
humidity, and heat (admissible ambient tempera-
ture range 0 – 40 °C).
Do not place any vessel filled with liquid on the unit,
e. g. a drinking glass.
Do not operate the unit or immediately disconnect
the plug from the mains socket
1. if there is visible damage to the unit or to the
mains cable,
2. if a defect might have occurred after the unit was
dropped or suffered a similar accident,
3. if malfunctions occur.
In any case the unit must be repaired by skilled per-
sonnel.
A damaged mains cable must be replaced by the
manufacturer or skilled personnel only.
Never pull the mains cable for disconnecting the
mains plug from the socket, always seize the plug.
For cleaning only use a dry, soft cloth; never use
chemicals or water.
No guarantee claims for the unit and no liability for
any resulting personal damage or material damage
will be accepted if the unit is used for other purposes

than originally intended, if it is not correctly connect-
ed, operated or not repaired in an expert way.
If the unit is to be put out of operation definitively,
take it to a local recycling plant for a disposal which
is not harmful to the environment.
Important for U. K. Customers!
The wires in this mains lead are coloured in accord-
ance with the following code:
blue = neutral
brown = live
As the colours of the wires in the mains lead of this
appliance may not correspond with the coloured
markings identifying the terminals in your plug, pro-
ceed as follows:
1. The wire which is coloured blue must be con-
nected to the terminal in the plug which is
marked with the letter N or coloured black.
2. The wire which is coloured brown must be con-
nected to the terminal which is marked with the
letter L or coloured red.

3 Applications

The switch SW-5DMX is specially designed for appli-
cation in DMX controlled lighting systems. It allows to
control five switching functions of units which are not
equipped with a DMX control. Thus, e. g. floodlights,
light effect units, and fog machines can be switched
on or off via the SW-5DMX from a DMX control unit.
The control channel outputs of the SW-5DMC are
floating and have a maximum rating of 8 A/250 V~.
DMX is the abbreviation of digital multiplex and
means digital control of several units via a single line.

4 Adjusting the DMX Start Address

In order to be able to control the SW-5DMX from a
DMX control unit, the DMX start address for the con-
trol channel 1 must be adjusted with the DIP switches
(2). If e. g. the address 6 is provided for controlling the
control channel 1 on the control unit, adjust the start
address 6 on the SW-5DMX.
The start address will result when adding the
binary values (1, 2, 4 ... 128, 256, see figures 3 – 5) of
the DIP switches set to the lower position, e. g.:
