FLEX DRIVE
COMPRESSION TESTER
TESTING PROCEDURE
1. Prior to starting engine should be off, the gearshift in Park or Neutral, and the parking brake on.
2. Remove the fuel pump fuse, start the car and let it run until it stalls from lack of
gasoline. Fuel in the system could mist out the plug ports and could ignite.
3. On vehicles with a distributor pull the coil wire from the center of the distributor cap.
4. On vehicles without a distributor disconnect the electrical connector at the ignition
control module. Consult your repair manual if you're unsure what that is.
5. Prior to pulling the spark plug boots label each location. It's important they're returned
to their original cylinder to prevent damage to the engine. Now remove all spark plugs.
6. Keep the plugs in order of the cylinder they came from. Lay them on a clean dry
work bench.
7. If you're using the press in style compression tester with the rubber tip be sure to hold
it firmly in the spark plug port. If using the threaded adapter style thread the correct
fitting into the spark plug port until the O-ring provides a leak proof connection.
Hand tighten only - DO NOT USE A WRENCH.
8. Crank the engine over using a remote starter switch. If one is not available have a
friend turn the ignition until the engine cranks five or six times.
9. Record the reading on the gauge and move to your next port. Reset the gauge prior
to cranking the engine.
10. Review the readings of all cylinders, the highest and lowest should not vary by more
than 15%.
11. If one or more cylinders read well below the others use a pistol oiler and squirt a
couple pumps of motor oil down the spark plug port. Retest and record the new
readings of the oil saturated cylinders.
WARNING: Do not touch the exhaust manifold,
radiator or other hot parts of the engine, injury may occur.
TEST RESULTS
If, after adding the oil, the reading is the same,
the valves are worn letting air pressure escape, or
they may be out of adjustment.
If you have a cylinder that reads significantly
lower than one next to it (20-lbs. or more),
a defective head gasket may be the cause.
Coolant or oil may be present in the cylinder
or on the spark plugs.
If the reading improves dramatically with the
oil, rings are worn and need to be replaced on
the piston in that cylinder.
If you get a pressure reading of less than
100 psi on any cylinder, it definitely isn't
mechanically sound.
