USS WASP Class
Mit der USS WASP (LHD-I) stellte die amerikanische Marine
1989 das erste Schiff einer neuen Klasse von „Amphibischen
Mehrzweck Angriffsschiffen" - so die offizielle Bezeichnung
des Schiffstyps —in Dienst. Sechsweitere Schiffe dieser Klasse
wurden noch in Auftrag gegeben. Siesind von der Konzeption
her Nachfolger der TARAWA-K'asse.
Hinsichtlich Ausrüstung und Bewaffnung Wird auch deutlich,
dass das Schiff hauptsächlich Flugzeuge und Hubschrauber
trägt, oftmals in der typischenSortierung30 Helikopterund 6
bis 8 Harrier-Senkrechtstarter.
Flugmaschinen w ie bei herkömmlichenFlugzeugträgern, doch
gegenüberdiesenkönnen sie in einem flutbaren Dockraum
über das Heck etliche
Hauptzweck dieserSchiffeist natürlichLandungsunternehmen
der Marine zu unterstützen. Aber nicht nur zur Unterstützung
von kämpfendenVerbändenist dieserSchiffstypausgerüstet,
er steht auch für RettungseinsätzeOder humanitäre Missionen
zur Verfügung.Sowaren Schiffeauch zur Unterstützungder
medizinischen Versorgung bei den Erdbebenkatastrophen in
der Türkei im Einsatz.

USS WASP Class
In 1989with the USS Wasp(LHD-I) the American navy put into
service the first vessel in a new class of „multi-purpose
amphibiousassault s hips"- the officialdesignationof the type.
Six more vessels of this class were also ordered. They are
designedassuccessors to the Tarawaclass.
As regardsequipment and armament it is alsoclearthat the
ship is primarily a carrier for aircraft and helicopters,typical
numbersoften being30 helicopters and 6 to 8 Harriervertical
take-off planes. T hat may not be as manyaircraftas in tradi-
tional carriers,but it enablesthem to take a number of land-
ing craft ina floodabledockingwell inthe stern.The mainpur-
pose of these ships is naturally to support navy landings.
Howeverthe type is not equippedsolelyto support fighting
units, it is also availablefor rescueand humanitarian missions,
likethe shipsthat were used in support of the medicalassis-
tance given in the Turkish earthquake disasters.
