Die Limousine der neuen Baureihe WI 26 wurde
angeboten, das erste Coupé erschien zwei Jahre später. Mit Hinblick auf
die Ölkrise in den 70er Jahren
der Entwicklung dieses Oberklassewagens ein. Das Fahrzeuggewicht
verringerte sich deutlich im Verhältnis zum Vorgänger, auch wegen des
verstärkten Einsatzes von Kunststoff und leichteren Stahllegierun
die Aerodynamik wurde
Spritverbrauch gesenkt. Trotz des Einsatzes der neuen Wer
erfüllte der Mercedes-Benz wie gewohnt alle neu aufgeko

ungewöhnlich langen Produktionszeit
die Reihe W 126 ständige Weiterentwicklungen
wobei die gravierenste Pflege 1985 vor allem mit
entwickelter Motoren stattfand sowie optisch mit
und Seitenbeplankungen erkennbar war. So er
erscheinende 560 SEC (5,6 Liter Motor, S —
spritzmotor, Coupé) mit 272 PS den bis dato leistun
Motor. Der Luxusliner glänzte durch eine ruhige, zugleich auch
spontane Kraftentfaltung in allen Drehzahlbereichen. Sein Acht-
zylindertriebwerk ermöglichte, ohne Katalysator, eine Beschleunigung
von 0 auf 100 in 6,9 Sekunden, die Höchstgeschwindigkeit
ab 1987 dank der jetzt 300 PSLeistung bei 250 km/h. Auffällig an den
Coupés waren die fehlenden B-Säulen, so dass die Dachrahmenstruktur
und die vorderen Holme entsprechend verstärkt waren. Auch das
Sternemblem war fest im Kühlergrill
ausgereifter Technik, harmonisch, elegant fließenden Linien, und die
sportlichen Akzente verliehen dem Mercedes Coupé einen gelungenen
sportlich-exklusiven Stil. Der ausgesprochen luxuriöse, geräumige
Innenraum bot gleichzeitig
bestach durch moderne Formgebung, hochwertige Materialien und
sorgfä Itige Verarbeitung.
Die Baureihe genoss hohes nationales und internationales Ansehen. Das
Luxussymbol schlechthin konkurrierte problemlos mit deutschen, aber
auch internationalen Edelmarken. Mit stolzen 892.000 gefertigten
Exemplaren (davon rund 28.290 hergestellten 560 SEC)gilt der W 126
auch heute noch als das erfolgreichste Oberklassefahrzeug der Welt.

300 bhp. A striking feature of the Coupé was the elimination
posts, so that the head rail structure and front crossmember had to be
suitably reinforced. The star emblem was incorporated in the radiator
grille. The mixture of advanced technology, harmonious, elegantly
flowing lines and sporty accents, gave the Mercedes Coupé an original
and exclusive sporty style. The distinctly luxurious, roomy interior offered
comfort combined with sportiness and its modern shape, high-quality
materials and careful workmanship were captivating
This range enjoyed a high national and international reputation. The
embodiment of luxury it had no difficulty in competing with the leading
German and international marques. With production figures of 892,000
