Functional description

The Dräger X-zone 5500/5800 alarm amplifier (referred to
below as the X-zone) is intended for use under industrial
conditions within a specified temperature range for an
uninterrupted operating time of up to 5 days on battery power.
Several X-zone devices can be grouped by means of a
wireless connection and/or communication cable to form an
alarm chain. In the event of an alarm, all connected X-zone
devices will issue the alarm. The Dräger X-am 5000, X-
am 5100 or X-am 5600 gas detection instrument is used to
generate the alarm (the gas detection instruments are called
X-am 5x00 in the following). The X-am 5x00 is coupled to the
X-zone via an infrared interface. In addition to generating the
alarm, the X-am 5x00 is also the user interface for the X-zone.
If the X-am 5x00 generates a gas alarm, this will be transmitted
to the X-zone for acoustic and visual amplification. Approved
accessories
that
correspond
parameters may be connected at the RS485 connection.
2.3

Intended use

The X-zone is an explosion-proof, portable alarm amplifier for
the quasi-stationary monitoring of hazard areas.
The X-zone can be used together with the X-am 5000/5100/
5600 gas detection instruments (certificates DEMKO 07 ATEX
143500X, IECEx ULD 07.0004X, BVS 10 ATEX E 080 X and
IECEx BVS 10.0053X).
Use under the following
approval conditions:
ATEX, IECEx
CSA
The device is only permitted to be used in areas where there
is a low risk of mechanical vibration. Several X-zone devices
can operate in a self-crosslinking network.
The X-zone is suitable for use within a temperature range of
-20 °C to +50 °C in Zone 0, Zone 1 or Zone 2 potentially
explosive areas, in which gases of explosion classes IIA, IIB or
IIC and temperature class T3/T4 may occur.

WARNING
!
When used in Group I potentially explosive areas, the
device may only be used in locations where there is a
low risk of mechanical effects. Following exposure to
an impact or a fall, the device must be subjected to a
visual inspection and, if damaged, removed from the
Ex zone.
In applications which require Category 1G/M1 or EPL
Ga/Ma devices (Zone 0), intensive electrostatic
discharge processes must be prevented!
When establishing an electrical connection to or
between connections XEXT1 and XEXT2, all wiring
must meet the following requirements:
The applicable national regulations regarding the
safety
installation of electrical equipment.
If necessary, the requirements for installation in
hazardous areas.
NOTICE
i
i
The Dräger X-zone is intended for detection in ambient
air. Increased exposure to certain hydrocarbons may
diminish the detection quality of the sensors.
The communication between multiple devices was not
tested in accordance with "CSA C22.2 No. 152 -
Combustible Gas Detection Instruments" and is
therefore not covered.

WARNING
!
The X-am 5000 (MQG 0000) must be equipped with an
NiMH T4 power pack (type HBT 0000, order no.
83 18 704).
The X-am 5x00 (MQG 001*/MQG 01**/MQG 002*/
MQG 01*1) must be fitted with an NiMH T4 power pack
(type HBT 0000, order no. 83 18 704) or T4 HC (type
HBT 0100, order no. 83 22 244), otherwise the device
will lose its explosion protection. The use of a different
power pack is prohibited.
NOTICE
i
i
Only X-am 5x00 devices with software version 6.6 or
later are compatible with the X-zone.
